Tiemoue Bakayoko relishing the chance to emulate former mentor Claude Makelele

‘Claude Makelele is an example to aspire to. So to have the chance to follow in his footsteps here at Chelsea is a real motivation. Claude sought me out immediately and told me he believed in me, counted on me, and what I had to work on so I could offer more on the pitch.I knew the glittering career he’d had as one of the best midfielders in the world, so it was important to take on board every word he told me. Over time I felt I did improve as a player, and a lot of that was down to Claude. He still helps me now that I am here in England. ‘Since I started playing football I’ve always dreamed about playing for certain clubs. Chelsea was certainly one of those. When I was little I was inspired by Didier Drogba, and my family always spoke to me about Makelele, so Chelsea’s always been a club that attracted me.’

Makelele on Kante and Bakayoko:

“[Kanté] enjoys the job. He plays for his team-mates. He’s not selfish. Every manager in the world wants a player like that in his team. He produces the quality with his plays and his runs but that’s not all, he does the defensive work too. He has got everything a complete midfielder has. He is the perfect fit for the system Conte has put on the pitch.”

“I met [Bakayoko] when I was working in Monaco and I pushed him to make that position his own. He defends with such quality now. [Kante and Bakayoko] are so much stronger together. Kante runs a lot, Bakayoko is more of a dribbler, he’s more clever and powerful in possession.”

“I think the most important thing in football is to remember your individual challenges come through the team’s goals and the challenges facing the team. So last year, for example, I won the title with Monaco and this year my main objective is to win the title with Chelsea.

“I really think that if we manage to defend the Premier League title that will be an incredible achievement and over and above even what I achieved at Monaco, because of the difficulty of the league here. It’s all about the team and I’m very dedicated now to achieving the goals we have set ourselves.”
